Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy in Mississauga
Difficult experiences do not always stay in the past. They can show up in how we react, whom we trust, how safe we feel in our own body, and how we see ourselves.
Trauma-informed psychotherapy is built around a simple idea: you set the pace. You decide what to share and when. Nothing needs to be forced.
I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist offering trauma-informed psychotherapy in Mississauga and online across Ontario.

What You May Be Experiencing
Not everyone uses the word trauma for what they went through, and that is fine. People who come to this kind of work sometimes notice:
- Strong reactions that seem bigger than the moment
- Feeling on guard, easily startled, or unable to fully relax
- Numbness, or feeling far away from yourself or others
- Relationship patterns that repeat old hurts
- Body responses such as freezing, a racing heart or tension when something reminds you of the past
- Difficulty trusting, or feeling that you must manage everything alone
How Psychotherapy May Help
Psychotherapy can offer a steady relationship where you are listened to without judgement.
You do not need to go through every painful detail to do this work. Often the work begins with the present: understanding your reactions, building a sense of steadiness, and noticing what helps you feel safer. If and when you choose to explore the past, we do so carefully.
How I Approach Trauma-Informed Work
Pacing and choice are at the heart of how I work. You can pause, change the subject or say no at any time, and that will be respected. I will check in with you about how the work feels.
I pay attention to the body as well as the mind, because difficult experiences are often held in both. Some people find it helpful to combine this with somatic psychotherapy. Others prefer to focus on present-day relationships through individual psychotherapy.
What Sessions May Involve
In the first session you are welcome to share only as much as you want. We can talk about what brings you here now, what support you have, and what would help you feel more comfortable in our work.
Later sessions may involve exploring whether and how past experiences show up in your present life, noticing body responses, and gradually building more room for choice. There is no pressure to revisit memories before you feel ready, or at all.
In Person and Online
You can meet with me in person at my Mississauga office, or online by secure video from anywhere in Ontario. Some people feel safer in their own space; others prefer the separation of an office. We can talk about what suits you. Read more about online psychotherapy in Ontario.

Fees & Insurance Coverage
Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist. After each session, you will receive an official receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider.
Because coverage varies from one plan to another, please confirm directly with your insurance provider that Registered Psychotherapy is included in your benefits.
No medical referral is required to begin psychotherapy with me. However, your individual insurance plan may have its own requirements for reimbursement.
Free 15-Minute Consultation
If you would like to speak before booking your first session, I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone consultation. We can briefly discuss what is bringing you to therapy, whether my approach may be a good fit, and the practical details of working together, including fees and session frequency.
Questions People Often Ask
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. You decide what to share and when. Much of the work can focus on the present and on how you are coping now.
What if I am not sure my experience counts as trauma?
You do not need a label to begin. If something from the past still affects you, it is worth giving it attention.
What if I feel overwhelmed during a session?
We slow down. You can pause or change direction at any time, and we will focus on helping you feel steadier.
Is this service for emergencies?
No. If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
