Panic Attack and Panic Disorder Therapy in Mississauga
A panic attack can arrive without warning. The heart races, breathing changes, the chest tightens, and a wave of fear rises that can feel overwhelming. Many people say that, in the moment, they were sure something terrible was happening.
After it passes, another fear often stays behind: what if it happens again?
I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist offering therapy for panic attacks and panic disorder in Mississauga and online across Ontario.

When Panic Seems to Come Out of Nowhere
People living with panic often describe:
- Sudden, intense fear that seems to come out of nowhere
- A pounding heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling or tingling
- A feeling of losing control, or that something is badly wrong
- Worry about the next attack, even on calm days
- Avoiding places or situations where an attack happened before: driving, crowds, meetings, travel
- Watching the body closely for any sign that panic might be starting
If you have not already, it is sensible to speak with your doctor about physical symptoms so that medical causes can be considered.
How Psychotherapy May Help
Panic can feel random, but it often has a pattern. There may be triggers we can begin to recognise, some obvious and some less so. Sometimes a situation today quietly touches an older fear. There is often a cycle too, where fear of the sensations makes the sensations stronger.
In therapy we look at that cycle calmly, outside the moment of panic. We also explore what was happening in your life when the attacks began, because panic sometimes arrives when other feelings have had nowhere else to go.
I cannot promise that panic attacks will disappear. Over time, you may come to understand your panic better, feel less afraid of it, and slowly return to parts of life you have been avoiding.
How I Approach Panic
I work in a steady, unhurried way. Panic is frightening, and the last thing it needs is more pressure. We go at a pace that feels safe enough for you.
I pay attention both to the present, what happens before, during and after an attack, and to the wider story of your life. Where it helps, we can also look at simple ways of staying with difficult sensations rather than fighting them.
Panic often overlaps with broader worry, so you may also find anxiety therapy relevant. If your body seems to hold a lot of the fear, somatic psychotherapy may interest you.
What Sessions May Involve
In the first session we talk about what your panic is like, when it started and how it is affecting your life. You do not need to describe any attack in more detail than feels comfortable.
Over time we may map out triggers and patterns, notice how the body responds, and explore the feelings and circumstances that surround the panic. You are welcome to ask questions at every step.

Questions People Often Ask
What is the difference between a panic attack and panic disorder?
A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear. Panic disorder usually describes repeated attacks along with ongoing worry about having more, often leading to avoidance. A qualified professional can help you understand what fits your experience.
Will therapy stop my panic attacks?
No one can promise that. Over time, as you understand your panic better, it may feel less frightening and have less control over your life.
What should I do if I feel I am in danger right now?
This service is not for emergencies. If you feel unsafe or have urgent physical symptoms, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
Can I start online if leaving home feels difficult?
Yes. Online sessions are available by secure video for people located in Ontario.
