Individual Psychotherapy in Mississauga

Sometimes there is no single word for what brings a person to therapy. It may be a feeling that life has become heavier than it should be, or a sense of repeating the same story in different places. Sometimes it is simply the wish to understand yourself more honestly.

Individual psychotherapy is a space that belongs only to you. Nothing needs to be solved in the first session, and you do not need a clear reason to begin.

I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist and Director of Jaagran Psychoanalysis and Wellness Centre in Mississauga.

What You May Be Experiencing

People come to individual psychotherapy for many reasons, for example:

  • Stress that does not lift, even when life looks fine from the outside
  • Grief, whether for a person, a relationship or a life you had imagined
  • Relationships that keep hurting in the same place
  • Life transitions: a move, a new role, a separation, becoming a parent, retirement
  • Recurring difficulties you understand in your head but cannot seem to change
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or unsure of what you want

How Psychotherapy May Help

Much of what troubles us is not random. It often follows patterns that were formed for good reasons, long ago, and continue quietly in the present.

In psychotherapy we give those patterns attention. We talk about what is happening now, notice what repeats, and sometimes follow the thread back to earlier experiences. The aim is not to rush into fixing something. It is to understand what is happening, so you can see yourself more clearly and have more choice in how you live.

How I Approach Individual Work

I listen closely, not only to what you say but to what seems hard to say. I am curious about feelings, dreams, relationships, the body and the parts of ourselves we are not always aware of.

I have been doing this work for more than 20 years. What I have learned is that each person needs to be met as they are, not fitted into a model. We work together, and you have a say in the pace and direction.

If anxiety is at the centre of what you are facing, you may also like to read about anxiety therapy. If difficult experiences from the past are part of your story, trauma-informed psychotherapy may be relevant.

What Sessions May Involve

In the first session we talk about what brings you here, a little about your history, and what you hope might change. It is also a chance for you to see whether working with me feels right.

After that, sessions are usually a mix of talking about what is happening in your life, noticing patterns as they come up, and reflecting on what they might mean. Some weeks feel light and some feel heavy. Both are part of the work.

Because coverage varies from one plan to another, please confirm directly with your insurance provider that Registered Psychotherapy is included in your benefits.

No medical referral is required to begin psychotherapy with me. However, your individual insurance plan may have its own requirements for reimbursement.

Free 15-Minute Consultation

If you would like to speak before booking your first session, I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone consultation. We can briefly discuss what is bringing you to therapy, whether my approach may be a good fit, and the practical details of working together, including fees and session frequency.

Questions People Often Ask

How do I know if individual psychotherapy is right for me?

If something has been on your mind for a while, or keeps returning, it may be worth exploring. A first conversation can help you decide.

Do I need to know what to talk about?

No. Many people start by saying they are not sure where to begin. That is a perfectly good place to start.

How long will I need to come?

It depends on what you are hoping for. Some people come for a focused period, and others choose longer, deeper work. We can review this together as we go.

Can I switch between in-person and online sessions?

Often, yes. We can talk about what works best for you.
