Depression Therapy in Mississauga

Depression does not always look like sadness. Sometimes it feels more like heaviness. Getting out of bed takes more effort than it should. Things you used to enjoy do not reach you the way they once did. You may be getting through the day, but something inside feels switched off.

You may not even know why you feel this way. That is more common than people think, and it does not mean there is nothing to talk about.

I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist offering depression therapy in person in Mississauga and online across Ontario.

What You May Be Experiencing

Every person’s experience is different, but people often describe some of the following:

  • Feeling low for a long time, even when nothing obvious is wrong
  • Low energy, or feeling tired no matter how much you rest
  • Losing interest in things you normally enjoy
  • Feeling disconnected from people, or from yourself
  • Finding it hard to get started with everyday tasks
  • A heaviness that is hard to put into words
  • Pulling away from friends, family or activities
  • Changes in motivation, where things that once mattered feel less important

Sometimes these feelings arrive after a clear event. Sometimes they build slowly, and you only notice later how long they have been there.

How Psychotherapy May Help

When you have been feeling low for a while, it can be hard to know where to begin. Psychotherapy gives you a regular, steady place to talk about what you are going through, at your own pace.

Low mood can sometimes be connected with loss, relationship experiences, ongoing pressure, feelings that have not had a chance to be expressed, earlier experiences, or patterns that have built up over time. Sometimes there is no single reason. Part of our work is to look at what has been happening, without forcing an answer too quickly.

Therapy does not promise a particular outcome or timeline. What it can offer is space to understand your experience more clearly, and to not carry it alone.

How I Approach Depression and Low Mood

I am interested not only in the symptoms of depression, but in understanding what may be happening underneath them. What changed? What has been hard to say? What might this heaviness be about?

Sometimes present-day feelings are connected with older emotional experiences, relationships or patterns we are not fully aware of. Sometimes they are more about what is happening in your life right now. I do not assume either. We find out together.

Depression and anxiety often travel together. If worry and tension are also part of your experience, you may find the page on anxiety therapy helpful. If you would like to explore a wider range of concerns, you can read about individual psychotherapy.

What Sessions May Involve

In the first session we talk about what brings you here, how long you have been feeling this way, and what life looks like for you right now. You do not need to explain everything, or have the right words.

Over time, sessions may involve talking about what is happening day to day, noticing when your mood shifts, exploring relationships and past experiences where they seem relevant, and making sense of patterns as they come up. We go at a pace that feels manageable for you.

In Person and Online

You can meet with me in person at my Mississauga office. Online psychotherapy is available by secure video for people located in Ontario. When energy is low, meeting from home can sometimes make it easier to begin. You can read more about online psychotherapy in Ontario.

Fees & Insurance Coverage

Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist. After each session, you will receive an official receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider.

Because coverage varies from one plan to another, please confirm directly with your insurance provider that Registered Psychotherapy is included in your benefits.

No medical referral is required to begin psychotherapy with me. However, your individual insurance plan may have its own requirements for reimbursement.

Free 15-Minute Consultation

If you would like to speak before booking your first session, I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone consultation. We can briefly discuss what is bringing you to therapy, whether my approach may be a good fit, and the practical details of working together, including fees and session frequency.

Questions People Often Ask

How do I know if what I am feeling is depression?

It can be hard to tell on your own. If you have been feeling low, flat, tired or disconnected for a while, it is worth talking about, whatever name it has. If you would like a medical assessment, your doctor can help with that.

Do I need a diagnosis before starting psychotherapy?

No. You can start with what you are experiencing now. As a Registered Psychotherapist, I do not independently communicate a medical diagnosis. If a diagnosis is important for you, a physician or other qualified professional can provide one, and psychotherapy can sit alongside that care.

Can psychotherapy help if I do not know why I feel low?

Yes, that is a very common starting point. Not knowing why is often part of what we explore together.

Can depression and anxiety happen together?

Yes, quite often. Many people notice both low mood and worry or tension. We can look at both, and at how they may be connected for you.

Can I have depression therapy online?

Yes. Online sessions take place by secure video for people located in Ontario.

If you need support right now: If you are thinking about suicide or need immediate crisis support, call or text 9-8-8. If your safety is at immediate risk, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
