Couples Counselling in Mississauga
Most couples do not come to counselling because they stopped caring. They come because they keep having the same argument, or because they have grown quiet with each other and are not sure how it happened.
Couples counselling is a place where both of you can be heard, and where we can look together at what keeps happening between you.
I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist offering couples counselling in Mississauga and online across Ontario.

What You May Be Experiencing
Couples often describe some of the following:
- Repeated arguments that start over small things and end in the same painful place
- Talking, but not feeling understood
- Distance: living side by side, but feeling alone
- Trust that has been hurt, and uncertainty about how to rebuild it
- Pressure from family, culture, work or parenting that pulls you in different directions
- A sense that you are both caught in a pattern neither of you chose
How Counselling May Help
In the middle of conflict, each person usually feels they are defending themselves. Counselling slows things down so that each of you can say what is really going on underneath, and hear the other with a little more space.
Often the problem is not one person. It is the pattern between you: one pursues and the other withdraws, one raises their voice and the other goes silent. When a pattern can be seen, it becomes easier to step out of it.
Counselling cannot promise a particular outcome. Some couples find their way back to each other. Others gain the clarity to part with more understanding and less harm. Both can matter.
How I Approach Couples Work
My role is not to decide who is right or wrong. I try to understand both of you and what is happening between you. Sometimes what is happening today has roots in much older experiences. Unconscious triggers, childhood patterns and old emotional wounds can quietly influence how we react to the person in front of us. When we begin to see that connection, the present starts to make more sense.
I pay attention to what is said, and also to what happens in the room: the moment someone pulls back, the tone that changes, the topic that is always avoided. These moments often tell us a great deal.
Sometimes personal work alongside couples work can be helpful. If that comes up, we can talk openly about it, including options such as individual psychotherapy.
What Sessions May Involve
In the first session I usually want to hear from each of you about what brings you here and what you hope might change. It is also a chance to ask me anything about how I work.
Later sessions may focus on specific arguments, how you communicate under stress, the history of your relationship, and the family and cultural influences you each carry. We move at a pace that feels respectful to both of you.
In Person and Online
Couples can meet with me in person at my Mississauga office, or online by secure video from anywhere in Ontario. Some couples join online from the same place, and we can talk about what setup works best for you. Read more about online psychotherapy in Ontario.

Because coverage varies from one plan to another, please confirm directly with your insurance provider that Registered Psychotherapy is included in your benefits.
No medical referral is required to begin psychotherapy with me. However, your individual insurance plan may have its own requirements for reimbursement.

Questions People Often Ask
What if my partner is hesitant about counselling?
A first session can simply be a chance to talk, ask questions and see whether the process feels right for both of you.
Will counselling save our relationship?
No one can promise that. What counselling can offer is a clearer understanding of what is happening between you, so that whatever you decide is made with more awareness.
Do you work with couples from different cultural backgrounds?
Yes. Family and cultural expectations are often an important part of the conversation, and we can give them the attention they deserve.
