Anxiety Therapy in Mississauga
Anxiety can look like many things. A mind that will not switch off at night. A tight chest before a meeting. A habit of running through everything that could go wrong, just in case. Sometimes it is loud, and sometimes it simply hums in the background of an ordinary day.
You may already have tried to push it away, reason with it or wait for it to pass. In anxiety therapy we try something a little different: we slow down and become curious about what your anxiety may be trying to tell you.
I am Atul Kumar Mehra, a Registered Psychotherapist seeing clients in person in Mississauga and online across Ontario.

When Your Mind Won’t Switch Off
People come to anxiety therapy with very different stories, but some experiences come up again and again:
- Worry that jumps from one thing to the next and never quite settles
- Overthinking conversations and decisions, long after they are over
- Physical tension: tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, an unsettled stomach, restless sleep
- Fear that feels bigger than the situation in front of you
- Social anxiety: dreading judgement, rehearsing what to say, or quietly avoiding gatherings
- A sense of being on alert, even when nothing seems to be wrong
These experiences do not define who you are. They can be signs that something inside you has been working very hard for a long time.
How Psychotherapy May Help
I often say that anxiety is not a malfunction. It is a message. It tends to appear for a reason, even when that reason is not yet clear to us.
Psychotherapy gives us time to listen to that message together. We can look at when your anxiety shows up, what it seems to be protecting you from, and whether it echoes older experiences. As you begin to understand your anxiety better, your relationship with it may also begin to change.
Where it is useful, we can also look at practical ways of steadying yourself in difficult moments. Therapy does not promise a life without anxiety, but it can offer a different way of meeting it.
Looking Beneath the Symptoms
I pay attention to what you notice in your thoughts, what you feel in your body, what happens in your relationships, and the parts of your experience that have not yet been put into words. I am less interested in labelling you and more interested in understanding you.
Over more than 20 years and more than 27,000 hours of client sessions, I have seen how often anxiety carries meaning. My work is to help you hear it more clearly, at a pace that feels manageable.
If you would like to know more about my thinking, you can read more about how I understand anxiety. If sudden waves of fear are part of your experience, you may also find the page on panic attack therapy helpful.
What Sessions May Involve
Our first session is a chance to talk about what brings you here and what you are hoping for. You do not need to explain everything at once, or even know exactly what to say.
Over time, sessions may involve talking through recent anxious moments, noticing what happens in your body, exploring patterns in your relationships, and making connections you may not have seen before. You are always welcome to ask questions about how we are working and why.
In Person and Online
Sessions take place in person at my office in Mississauga, or online by secure video for people located anywhere in Ontario. Some people prefer the quiet of the office; others find it easier to talk from home. You can read more about online psychotherapy in Ontario.

Fees & Insurance Coverage
Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist. After each session, you will receive an official receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider.
Because coverage varies from one plan to another, please confirm directly with your insurance provider that Registered Psychotherapy is included in your benefits.
No medical referral is required to begin psychotherapy with me. However, your individual insurance plan may have its own requirements for reimbursement.
Free 15-Minute Consultation
If you would like to speak before booking your first session, I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone consultation. We can briefly discuss what is bringing you to therapy, whether my approach may be a good fit, and the practical details of working together, including fees and session frequency.
Questions People Often Ask
Is my anxiety serious enough for therapy?
You do not need to reach a certain level of distress before reaching out. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or peace of mind, that is reason enough to talk about it.
Will therapy make my anxiety go away?
I cannot promise that, and I would be cautious of anyone who does. As you understand your anxiety better, you may begin to feel less controlled by it and respond to it differently.
What is the difference between anxiety therapy and Anxiety Coaching?
Anxiety therapy is psychotherapy, which is regulated clinical work with a Registered Psychotherapist. Anxiety Coaching is separate, non-clinical work focused on education and practical ways of understanding anxiety. If you are not sure which fits, we can talk it through.
Can I have anxiety therapy online?
Yes. Online sessions take place by secure video for people located in Ontario.
